Do Your Research

Filed under: Breaking In, Kvetch, Pitching, ProdCos, the biz, Working — petertypingfaster @ 11:35 am

I’ve harped on this before, but a few experiences the last few days have pushed me over the edge, and I just have to say a little something.

Do. Your. Research.

Not when you’re writing your show, but when you’re pitching it. If you go into a broadcaster, know what they have on the air. If you’re pitching a traditional broadcaster, don’t pitch them a show that would have a hard time finding a home on cable. Don’t pitch a serious family drama to the comedy network.

If we want to get completely hypothetical, don’t pitch a dark, violent mafia show to a children’s network.

Just don’t do it. All you do is piss off the development monkeys like me. Keep pissing us off and we might just “lose” your submission at the bottom of our submission pile, and no one wants that.

Just do all of us a favor and do your damn research.

That is all.

Hrmmm, I dunno, I could picture Jimmy ‘The Fish’ and Joey ‘The Squirrel’ teaching children about the dangers of organized crime…
